More than 70% of MOT testers could be banned
It could be a lot harder to get an MOT test this year
A swathe of mechanics across Britain could be prevented from carrying out MOT tests simply for not completing annual tests.
Are MOT testers leaving assessments too late?
According to the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), less than 30% of testers had completed their annual assessment by the week before the 31 March deadline.
With so few testers completing the assessment in time, this could lead to garages cancelling MOT appointments due to lack of available staff.
Testers who have missed the deadline will have to ‘competently demonstrate’ they can carry out a complete MOT test to regain their certificate. The new crackdown will also require some testers to submit a recent DBS check as part of the assessment.
It’s required by law to have passed your MOT test to be able to drive, so lack of testers could have far-reaching consequences for drivers.
How will this affect garages?
IMI head of policy and public affairs, Hayley Pells said garages “need to support their technicians in their training and assessments to avoid any impact on the business.”
Many smaller, independent garages may find they’re unable to conduct tests at all and may lose out on valuable business.
