When it comes to buying a new car, you want something able to protect you and your family in the event of an accident, so one of the most important things to look at is its safety performance.
The good news is that cars are getting safer with every passing year as new technology is introduced to our favourite models.
But with so many makes and models to choose from, how can you decide which one will provide you and your family with the safest drive?
Thankfully, every year the good people at What Car? reveal their safest cars based on the assessment of a panel of automotive experts, who look at Euro NCAP standards and a number of other criteria.
Here’s our quick rundown of the top 10 safest cars that fared well.
Subaru XV
This car came an impressive second place in the What Car? Awards, underlining the Japanese firm’s commitment to safety standards. Alongside the ‘Eyesight’ technology, the Vehicle Dynamics Control system uses the permanent four-wheel-drive to limit over and understeer.
Honda Civic
Having hit showrooms just last year, the 10th generation Civic is the most technologically advanced — and safest — of its kind. It has a five-star Euro NCAP rating and comes with a multi-angle rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control, amongst other safety features.
Volvo S90/V90
This estate car is also one of Volvo’s biggest, meaning the manufacturer has managed to cram even more safety tech into it. ‘Pilot Assist’ helps drivers keep in their lanes and can help maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front.
Mercedes X-Class
The brand new X-Class represents something of a new venture for Mercedes Benz. But with a host of new safety measures, it’s a great family option for those looking for a double cab pick-up truck.
Volkswagen Arteon
The brand new Arteon is an executive saloon with a high-class safety spec, including adaptable steering that can change depending on the weather. It also has night-vision cameras and self-parking assistance.
Subaru Impreza
Imprezas have long been one of the safest cars on the market and the new model is no exception. The Japanese manufacturer’s innovative ‘Eyesight’ camera technology comes as standard, as does rear cross traffic direction when reversing.
Toyota C-HR
Another SUV on the list, the Toyota C-HR comes with the pre-collision system Lane Departure Alert, which also helps protect pedestrians. The C-HR can also self-adjust its speed to keep within the limit.
Vauxhall Insignia
The only British make on the top 10 list, the Insignia is Vauxhall’s most upmarket model and doesn’t skimp on the safety features. Vauxhall’s ‘OnStar’ system is fitted as standard, which automatically calls the emergency services in the event of a heavy collision.
Volvo XC60
The Swedish car company has enjoyed a reputation for excellent safety standards for decades, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the XC60 claimed first place in the What Car? Awards. The car is so safety tech-heavy that it even has a system which means the car effectively drives itself in heavy urban traffic.
Volkswagen T-Roc
Coming in third in the What Car? Awards, the sporty T-Roc is an SUV packed with safety features, including a Blind Sport Alert system and a feature that warns of animals, cyclists and other road users.
