How to buy a convertible for under £2,000 this summer

Despite unreliable weather conditions, convertibles are immensely popular in Britain

All this warm weather and sunshine makes you want to throw caution to the wind and take off your top. Fortunately, these convertibles allow you to do just that and they’re all under £2,000!

BMW 3 Series Convertible

The most common examples of the 3 Series within this budget are the E46 models, which are robust and excellent to drive. There are even top spec straight-six models which come in under budget, meaning you can be top-down for an absolute steal.

Buyer’s tip: Be sure to double check the arches as these are prone to rust and listen out for worrisome knocking noises when turning the steering wheel to lock while travelling at low speed.

MG TF

This mid-size engine, rear wheel drive roadster is nippy and easy on the eye. They come with a folding cloth roof and most for sale under £2,000 have a 1.8-litre engine.

Buyer’s tip: On the market there are some that come in much cheaper – even as low as £500 – but if you’re buying a bargain basement model be sure to have your wits about you. Do your checks and if you don’t know a lot about what’s going on under the bonnet, take along someone who can verify its condition.

Citroen C3 Pluriel

This nippy four-seater hatchback didn’t see much success, even after pitching itself as “five cars in one”. The good news is, this gives you a soft top at a very low price, with at least 20 on AutoTrader under the £2,000 mark, going as low as £550.

Buyer’s tip: The complexity of taking the roof off has put some buyers off, so make sure that the folding roof is functioning correctly before you hand over your cash.

Audi TT Roadster

Reliable engines and strong builds mean the Audi TT holds its value. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a bargain if you have an eagle eye on the market, and there are a few under £2,000 up for grabs.

Buyer’s tip: Well-priced models will probably come with a higher than average mileage so triple check its service history and have a good look under the bonnet.

Mercedes SLK

You’ll be able to pick up an early 2000’s model for under the threshold if you choose carefully and are prepared to do a bit of leg work.

Buyer’s tip: A poor service history will give you an indication of what you’re letting yourself in for – including higher repair costs and pricier parts. Do a thorough check before viewing to reduce the risk of astronomical future maintenance bills.
