Why it’s a cracking idea to get windscreen chips fixed

Get your windscreen chip fixed as soon as possible to avoid it turning into a crack.

You’re driving along the road when a lorry wheel flicks up a stone which hits your windscreen and causes a chip. Frustrating, we know…but our windscreen partner Auto Windscreens is here to tell you why it’s best to get it repaired as soon as possible.

Chips are cheaper
The insurance excess for a windscreen repair is cheaper than a replacement, which might be required if a chip is left and turns into a crack as cold temperatures cause glass to expand and contract.

Speedier service
Windscreen repairs are much quicker than windscreen replacements, so you’ll be back on the road in no time. There’s no need to order new glass and the actual appointment only takes 45 minutes.

Think of the environment
While Auto Windscreens does recycle 100% of glass removed from vehicles, a repair results in far less other waste – from chemical waste to, believe it not, cotton buds!

Just as safe
You might think it’s better to have a windscreen replaced to make sure your car is safe, but once a chip is repaired, the glass is just as strong and secure as before.

Winter glass care
While we know windscreen damage is often unavoidable, here are a few tips to protect your car’s glass this season:

  • Park your vehicle in a garage overnight if you can or use a windscreen cover so the glass is not exposed to the elements
  • Ensure you top up with anti-freeze screenwash – don’t be tempted to use washing up liquid instead
  • Avoid pouring boiling water on vehicle glass to remove ice or snow as this may result in the glass breaking or exploding
  • Always carry a good quality de-icer and ice scraper
  • When de-icing your side windows, ensure they’re free from frost at the edges so the opening mechanism isn’t damaged
  • Regularly check your wiper blades. Try not to pull them off frozen glass or turn them on if the screen is iced over as the rubber may tear
